PEACE and tranquillity prevailed in Mutare yesterday with no recorded incidents of violence as residents remained calm while business in the Central Business District was normal.

It was business as usual as all shops, banks, and companies were operating normally. Earlier in the day, police had posted on micro blogging site, Twitter, urging transport operators and the business community to continue offering their services as their security was guaranteed.

Mutare residents shunned the demonstrations despite MDC-Alliance secretary for Justice and Legal Affairs Mr Innocent Gonese’s statement in a press briefing held this week in Harare that the demos would continue in Mutare yesterday.

Officer Commanding Mutare District Chief Superintendent Florence Marume who issued a prohibition notice against the MDC-Alliance demonstration in the eastern border city on Wednesday told The Manica Post yesterday that there was no riotous behaviour that happened in the city.

“Mutare is very peaceful. I did not receive any reports of riotous behaviour. The whole city is generally quiet. Ever since, we guaranteed people that they will be safe. Actually we have a peaceful and tranquil environment.

“We deployed our members to ensure that they conduct patrols and maintain law and order as well as contain any unruly behaviour,” she said.

Addressing media on Wednesday in Mutare, Minister of State for Manicaland provincial affairs, Dr Ellen Gwaradzimba, applauded Manicaland citizens for their maturity and spirit of patriotism.

“I salute you for the maturity and spirit of patriotism in ignoring MDC-Alliance’s calls to destabilise Manicaland province. The province is already implementing plans to address the hardships caused by Cyclone Idai and is currently undertaking big developmental projects like road network construction, Gemology Centre, irrigation development, to mention just a few. All these efforts by government put to shame on those who are organising to destabilise the country through demonstrations,” she said. She also urged citizens to have faith in the crafted policies that will put the country in a firm economic recovery trajectory.
