BUSTLING Manica Diamonds top man, Farai ‘Gudo’ Mugumwa has found his feet in the Gem Boys frontline and is now looking forward to end the 2021/2022 Castle Lager Premiership season with, at least, more than 10 goals to his name.

Going into Manica Diamonds’ match against Bulawayo Chiefs at Sakubva Stadium on Sunday, Mugumwa has found the net three times, one against FC Platinum, one against Hwahwa FC – both goals scored when he was still with Tenax C.S FC – and the other against CAPS United when he had joined the Gem Boys.

After crossing the floor from cross-town rivals, Tenax C.S FC at the resumption of Premier Soccer League action almost two months ago, Mugumwa has added depth to a star-studded outfit that can beat any team in the top-flight league.

The Mutare Premiership side is still within striking distance in the race for the title which is slowly, but surely shaping up and they are only four points shy of the pacesetters – the Gamecocks.

Only last Saturday, Manica Diamonds surrendered a 3-2 lead in the last minute of the encounter against Chicken Inn at Luveve Stadium in Bulawayo and settled for a crucial away point against the highly rated log leaders.

Mugumwa said: “I think we did well to get an away point against the log leaders. Yes, we should have won that match with a bit of luck, but I think the draw was also good for us in that the gap between us and Chicken Inn was not widened.

“If we had lost that match we could have been trailing the log leaders by seven points by now. Therefore, we just need to move on quickly and make sure we correct the things that we got wrong in the previous encounter.”

The former Dombotombo Primary, Mutanda Primary and Sakubva High One student admits that he now feels at home at the Johanisi Nhumwa-coached Manica Diamonds.

“I think I have fitted in well in the team. We have a brotherly relationship as players and that is important. I am looking forward to score at least 10 goals this season, for a start. I feel I can achieve that given the combinations that we have managed to establish within the team,” he said.

Mugumwa believes that the match against Bulawayo Chiefs is a must win.

“We just have to win the match against Bulawayo Chiefs at all costs. No doubt about that! That is the only way we can keep the pressure on the teams above us on the log table. A win on Sunday may also see us go one or two places up the log standings,” said the comic personality, who got the nickname Gudo way back when he was still in Grade Five owing to his knack to seize silent moments in class and startle everyone by a making a sound very similar to that made by baboons.

The 31-year-old footie star feels he can still go for more three years while playing in the country’s top-flight league.

“I think I still have the energy and skill to go for three more years while playing in the Premiership. The experience I have gained over the years is actually helping me at this stage of my career and I am confident that I can retire at the age of 34 or 35,” said Mugumwa.
