MUTARE Sports Club outfit put behind their defeat in the Paramount Garments Under-20 Division One Rugby League opener and rose to an emphatic 129-0 triumph over hapless Pioneers at Old Hararians Sports Club last week on Saturday.

The Manicaland representatives in the Paramount Garments Under-20 Division One opened their 2023 season account on a losing note after succumbing to a 10-21 defeat at the hands of Marondera Winston Academy.

However, the Mutare outfit ensured that they rewrite the script with an emphatic victory that surprised most neutrals who were judging them by their season opening result.

With eighth man, Tawanda Dembaremba being named man-of-the-match, Mutare Sports Club were firing from all cylinders as the impressive captain, Martin Jumburu doing what he knows best as the teams’ first centre.

Pioneers were on a bye in the opening round of matches.
Head coach, Casper Bandi said: “It is not easy to play against a team that you do not know how they play and that was case with Pioneers. I am happy that the boys were really switched on this time around.

“This win will go down in the history of Mutare Sport Club as one of, if not the most emphatic triumphs for the club. It was a well-deserved victory after getting back to the drawing board to look at ways of snatching our first victory in the league.”

This weekend, Mutare Sport Club will be playing against Southern City in Harare.

“Southern City is a difficult team. They are a stubborn outfit. It will be a challenge for us, but we are really looking forward to it as we wish to keep the momentum.

“We have played against them several times and we know what they are capable of. I think we are prepared for them and we are looking forward to get the job done again,” said Bandi.

Safety wear and casual clothing company, Paramount Garments sponsors the league.

University of Zimbabwe, Hatcliffe, Glenwood Stars, Marondera, Mabvuku and MSC Under-20 make up the list of teams in Paramount Garments Division One League, while MSC, Harare Sports Club, Pitbullls, Old Hararians, Old Georgians, Horns, Zimbiru Titans, Northern Chiefs and FS Raiders are competing in the Premiership Division.
