MUTARE Sports Club, the Shumbaz will be participating in the newly formed national league, Super Six League. The league, which is expected to kick off on March 16, will feature the country’s top six teams.

The participating teams include Old Georgians, Harare Sports Club, Matabeleland Warriors, Old Hararians and Highlanders.

The Zimbabwe’s National Rugby League, which was prematurely abandoned in 2014 due to financial constraints, is set to return this year. Zimbabwe Rugby Union (ZRU) president, Aaron Jani, said the country’s rugby governing body has taken a huge step towards reviving the country’s National Rugby League after securing sponsorship for the six teams.

The league will see six teams battling it out in what promises to be an exciting treat for rugby fans across the country.

The new model adopted by ZRU will see sponsorship corporates adopting separate individual clubs instead of having one title sponsor looking after all the teams in the top flight league.

“The most important initiative for 2019 is the introduction of the league.  We want to get back to where we can get strong competition in the clubs. Unfortunately we cannot start with a big league. We will only start with six teams.

“We have instead approached one sponsor to look after an individual team, meaning we will have six sponsors, one for each team.

“Our aim is to make sure that we grow this league that next year we possibly have eight or 10  teams.   The league is going to start on March 16. It is going to be played on a home and away basis. We are going to play a total of 12 games. We will then have semi and final matches,” he said.

Jani said they will select a team that is going to take part in the Super Sports Challenge in April.

“We are going to play the first leg of the club games and we will pick  a squad that will represent us at the Super Sport Challenge. We were granted the right to play in the Super Sport Challenge from April 27 where we will play against eight South African sides including a Namibia one.

“The tournament will last six- eight weeks. After finishing the Super Sport Challenge   we will then come back and resume the second leg of our league games,” he said.

Mutare Sports Club coach Mackenzie Munetsi said his charges will have to pull their socks up since they will be competing with the country’s top teams.

“We will be taking part in the Super Six and it is a challenge for us but we will give it our all. We have to work very hard to match the level of rugby that is required in the league,” he said.

Meanwhile MSC Under-21 team will play against Pitbulls in the 2019 Harare Rugby league Under-21 championship at Mutare Sports Club tomorrow.

Young Shumbaz lost their opening game 40-12 to University of Zimbabwe before beating XP Horns 12-5. Last weekend they dismissed Hatcliffe 65-8.
