MOUNTAINEERS are looking forward to maintaining their fine run when they meet unbeaten Tuskers in Zimbabwe’s national one-day cricket competition — Pro50 championships — tomorrow at Old Hararians Sports Club.

Going into tomorrow’s match, Mountaineers will still be basking in their back-to-back victory over defending champions Eagles.

The matches were played between Tuesday and Wednesday.

In their opening match, Mountaineers won by 129 runs. Fine attacking fifties from their opening pair, Kevin Kasuza and Joylord Gumbie, led the way to a victory for the Mountaineers.

Kasuza, who has recovered from two concussion accidents in the Test matches against Sri Lanka, did well for the Mountain Goats after a fine 52 off 69 balls, with six fours and a six.

In their second match, they won although play was disrupted by heavy rains.

Wickets by Doni Tiripano and Roy Kaia helped the Mountain Goats to win what looked like a close match.

Tiripano took three wickets off Eagle’s top order batsmen while Kaia took four wickets. Mountaineers won by 58 runs (Duckworth-Lewis method).

Mountaineers top the six-team log table with six points from two matches.

Tuskers beat Rangers in both matches and are second on the log table with five points.

Mountaineers coach Shepherd “Shepp” Makunura is treating the Eagles game with caution.

“Big results for us against the defending champions.

“We needed to get off to a good start in this competition and we managed to do just that.

“Every game is important to us, we have obviously put the Eagles games behind us and are taking it one game at a time.

“We hope to continue with the fine run since we have started very well,” he said.

What is disappointing again is tomorrow’s game is being played in Harare, depriving Mutare fans of watching their team in action.

Makunura said he was looking forward to playing before the home crowd.

“It is disappointing to play away from home.

“We enjoy playing at home, we have always enjoyed good support from Mutare community.

“We usually get good crowds coming to watch our matches. It has been long since we last played at Mutare Sports Club,” he said.
