MOUNTAINEERS lived up to their GOAT brand name – Greatest Of All Time – when they retained Zimbabwe’s first class cricket Logan Cup title for the third successive season and they will now have a chance to put icing on the cake when they face Eagles at Mutare Sports Club on Saturday and Sunday in a Pro 50 tie.

When the two sides – Mountaineers and Eagles – met in the same competition and at the same venue last season, the hosts won by four wickets with 31 balls remaining.

The Mountain Goats, as they are fondly referred to by their fans in the eastern border city who have hardly had a chance to watch them in action, will parade their Logan Cup silverware at Mutare Sports Club this weekend.

Coach Shepherd Makunura confirmed that the match against Eagles is a homecoming show where they will also be parading their Logan Cup trophy.

“We are over the moon after claiming a third successive Logan Cup. Boys worked hard throughout the Logan Cup season and we deservedly retained the trophy.

“But however we have to shift our focus quickly to the Pro 50s where we lost last year in the finals to Rising Stars. Two big games against Eagles which we would want to win to keep our hopes alive of clinching the double that we failed to do last season,” he said.

Makunura said their approach to the Pro 50 match will depend with the prevailing conditions. “Our approach will obviously depend on pitch conditions,” said Makunura.

Makunura urged followers of the gentleman’s game in Mutare to throng Mutare Sports Club in their numbers. “They (fans) must come in large numbers and celebrate with us the Logan Cup trophy and watch some exciting cricket,” he said.

In the just ended Logan Cup, Mountaineers beat title contenders Eagles by 10 wickets at Old Hararians to reach an unassailable 36 points with a match in hand.

Second-placed Rhinos finished on 29 points having played all their games, while Eagles who topped the log for most of the season finished third with 26 points.

Tuskers are bottom with 14 points having failed to win a single match all season.
