MANICALAND is targeting to put 7 000 hectares under winter wheat, a massive jump from last year’s 3 000ha.

Planting is expected to commence next week and drag until end of May.

Agritex provincial head, Mrs Philipa Rwambiwa said preparations are going on well, adding that more farmers are expected to come on board.

“We started registering farmers in January and most of our farmers are preparing their land. They are targeting to start planting from next week to end of May. This is the optimum period for planting,” said Mrs Rwambiwa.

She also revealed that contracting of farmers is progressing on well.

Farmers will continue to get support from Government and private players in order to boost wheat production.

“Delivery of inputs is set to start soon. These will come from Command Agriculture, Northern Farming and National Foods, who are contracting farmers for wheat production,” said Mrs Rwambiwa.

“We are encouraging more farmers to come on board. Wheat farming is mainly done by large-scale farmers who have water bodies and machinery for planting, spraying and harvesting,” said Mrs Rwambiwa.

According to Agritex, some farmers are reducing hectarage due to the inadequate irrigation water.

Mrs Rwambiwa encouraged farmers to adhere to good agronomic practices.

“Farmers need to apply enough fertilisers and water the crop adequately. They should also keep the field weed free.”
