ALL is set for the national inter provincial baseball tournament which will kick-off today (Friday) at Mutare Boys High School.
Baseball fans are in for a treat as six provinces are expected to battle for top honours in today’s tournament.
Manicaland Baseball Association secretary Collen Gando said they are looking forward to a grea tournament.
“We are hosting the inter provincial tournament which will start today and end tomorrow at Mutare Boys High School.
Six provinces are coming for the tournament. We are expecting Bulawayo, Masvingo, Mashonaland West, Harare and Midlands,” he said.
Gando said their aim is to have a viable baseball league in the province.
He said they were looking forward to the development of the sport from grassroots as the Manicaland Baseball Association executive is working tirelessly to revive the sport.
“We have planned to develop the sport from grassroots.
Our sport lacks sponsorship and it is one of the challenges that we are facing.
We were forced to put the league on halt because we had few teams. We came up with another strategies of running the league. We grouped the players that we have according to their age groups.
We have Under-13, 16, 20 and seniors. We are rebuilding but definitely we will have a league next year,” he said.
Manicaland province has done very well in the past years as it has produced a number of players for the national team.
In August, the Under-16 provincial team won a bronze medal in Bulawayo.
At the same tournament, five players were selected for the national Under-18 team.
Gando was also drafted into the national team set-up.
