A CHIADZWA bar tender, who had turned his employer’s premises into a marijuana storeroom, was recently arrested after being caught with almost 1.5 tonnes of the drug worth US$2 million.

Twenty-year-old Prince Musara hails from Tonhorai Village in Marange and was employed at a bar at Mashukashuka Business Centre in Chiadzwa.

Musara was arrested after police received a tip-off from his employer who had made a surprise visit to his bar last Thursday, only to discover bags of marijuana in the room.

Police trapped Musara at his workplace and recovered 1 400kg of marijuana from the bar’s back room. Musara admitted that he was the owner of the marijuana.

Upon his arrest, the marijuana was transported to Mutare where it will be produced in court as exhibit.

Musara has since appeared before the Mutare Magistrates’ Court facing charges of contravening Section 170 (1) (b) (i) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act, Chapter 9:23 and Section 157, which makes possession of marijuana a criminal offence.

When asked in court on the source of the mbanje, Musara remained tight-lipped.

Magistrate Ms Nyasha Kuture convicted Musara on his own guilty plea.

However, Ms Kuture remanded him in custody to today (Friday) for sentencing to allow the State to check if he has previous convictions.

Mr Brian Goto prosecuted.
