This Sunday, which happens to be the second Sunday of May, mothers will be honoured and celebrated in different parts of the world.

These include biological mothers, adoptive mothers, aunts and elder sisters who have been termed ‘deputy parents’ due to their roles in bringing up their siblings, nephews and nieces.

Mother’s Day is a celebration honouring mothers and their influence in society.

The Manica Post caught up with several people in Manicaland and asked them to share their views on this important day.

Several revealed their plans to buy flowers, clothes and expensive fragrances for their mothers.

Others will be taking their mothers to massage parlours and sight seeing.

For others, just being there for each other is all that matters.

Last year most people failed to celebrate the day due to a tighter Covid-19 national lockdown and therefore this year could be used to make up for that.

Rufaro Makombe (24) will be celebrating her late mother as well as her sister who stepped in following their mother’s death.

“Mothers are important in our everyday lives. Without our mothers, we wouldn’t be here. They made us who we are and what we can become. My mother died while I was still young and my elder sister raised me. She is the mother I will be celebrating on Sunday.

“All along I could not pamper her as I was still in school, but this Sunday I will do all I can to show her my love and appreciation. Just like a mother, she sacrificed a lot to raise me and our brothers, including her time. She deserves to be respected and appreciated,” said Rufaro.

For Michelle Mupotaringa, all the 365 days of the year are Mothers’ days.

“In my family, everyday is Mothers’ Day. Our father died when we were young and our mother had to make things happen so we appreciate her so much. We celebrate her every day. We even celebrate her on Fathers’ Day because it is not easy for an unemployed widow to raise five children,” she said.

She, however, said on Sunday a special gift awaits her mother as the Mupotaringa siblings intend to pamper her through a massage, manicure and pedicure.

Peter Pondo of Chikanga, Mutare, said in his home, Mother’s Day is a double celebration for his wife and mother.

“My children are still too young to know that the day exists, so I will take care of it on their behalf. I will get some gifts for my mother and wife to show them that I love and care for them. This day should also remind us to show some love to the other ladies in our neighbourhoods whose children are away or have passed on,” he said.

Tinashe Mutiyadhi from Vumba said Covid-19 has reminded people of the need to love each other.

“This pandemic has brought about so many challenges across the world. Many people have lost their lives and some mothers have taken upon themselves to do anything possible to save their families from this global pandemic.

“Our mothers are boiling Zumbani leaves for us daily to boost our immune systems. We are who we are today because of our mothers’ love,” he said.

Thandiwe Mufushwa, a business lady selling gift hampers, said she is receiving a lot of enquiries on suitable gifts for Mothers’ Day.

“Mothers are gifts from God. They are our source of strength, comfort and hope for better things. I celebrate this day in recognition of my mother’s love, sacrifice, hard-work and determination.

“Business is looking good for us as people make plans to spoil their mothers,” she said.
