MEGA Market Mountaineers cricket outfit will have to wait a little longer to have a taste of Logan Cup triumph which they last won under the late former coach, Shepherd Makunura at the end of the 2018-19 season.

For the second time on the trot, the Manicaland and Mashonaland East cricket franchise looks set to end the current Logan Cup campaign on second position.

Eagles won the 2022-23 Logan Cup, although there is still one round of the four-day first-class cricket competition to be played.

They have already completed their eight-match programme and finished with 122 points, a tally that cannot be overtaken by any other provincial team.

Even if the second-placed Mega Market Mountaineers are to win their last match with all the possible bonus points, they can only accrue a total of 121 points.

Eagles began the season well, with three victories in their first four matches as they defeated Southern Rocks, Rhinos and Tuskers.

They suffered their only defeat in the return match against Rhinos, and mainly due to wet weather their remaining four matches were draws.

Before their latest success, Eagles had last lifted the Logan Cup in the 2015/16 season.

The current campaign will officially end with Southern Rocks facing Rhinos and Tuskers taking on Mountaineers in matches scheduled for March 29 to April 1.

Meanwhile, at Old Hararians on Monday, there was a good match as PJ Moor hit a rollicking 59 not out that, with fine support from Brian Bennett and took Mega Market Mountaineers to a six-wicket victory over the young Lions team.

This match had to be reduced to 15 overs per side after a delayed start, but the Mountain Goats still managed to get off to a winning start in T20 tourney.

Lions, put in to bat, were given a fine start by Awad Naqvi (35) and Hamid Ali (34), who put on 67 for the first wicket in 6,3 overs. Both were dismissed by Shingi Masakadza, but Blessed Muzite (24) and Christopher Masike (14) helped to boost the score to 136 for five, an excellent total in 15 overs.

Mountaineers lost Kevin Kasuza for 15, but then came the match-winning partnership for the second wicket between Moor and the former Under-19 player, Bennett.

They added 93 together in only 8,2 overs before Bennett was out after a brilliant display of hitting: 41 runs off 22 balls, with three sixes and three fours.

Tony Munyonga hit two sixes before he was out, while Moor stayed to finish with 59 not out, having faced 41 balls and hit two sixes and six fours.

Kuda Macheka did best of the bowlers, with two wickets for 19 in his three overs. — Senior Reporter/ZC.
