MUTARE Probation Hostel last week received a major boost after local hotel, Golden Peacock, made a donation to support the inmates housed at the institution.

The hotel, which is on a rigorous community social responsibility programme, handed over bed linen, hand sanitisers, face masks, rice, maize-meal and salt, among other things.

The probation hostel was registered in 1975 to cater for vulnerable children in need of care and those with delinquent behaviour. It currently houses 24 children.

The institution has been facing a plethora of challenges, among them a lack of resources to cater for the children’s day-to-day needs.

Speaking at the hand-over ceremony, the Ministry of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare’s Manicaland Provincial Development Officer, Mr Anthony Marongwe, whose speech was read by Manicaland Social Development Officer, Mr Masimba Machisa, said the gesture will go a long way in cushioning the children.

“The Ministry of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare through the Department of Social Development has a mandate to reduce poverty and enhance self-reliance through the provision of social protection services to vulnerable and disadvantaged groups in Zimbabwe. This is meant to cushion vulnerable households and cannot be achieved without the assistance of other stakeholders.

“We are happy to have this cordial relationship with Golden Peacock Hotel.

“The hotel is not known only for serving sumptuous meals and top quality hotel standards, but also for offering a helping hand to the disadvantaged members of the society.

“Manicaland Province caters for 13 children’s homes, one rehabilitation centre and one probation institution. Mutare Probation Hostel and Remand Home offers rehabilitation facilities to children who are deemed to be in need of care.

“Some of these children may have been in conflict with the law, but it is our aim that when they leave this institution, the children will be exemplary members of the society,” he said.

Golden Peacock general manager, Mr Adonis Mutigwe, said they will continue working with the communities they live in.

“We have noted their concerns and we will assist them in addressing some of the challenges they are facing through engaging other stakeholders.

“We are not just a tourism facility, but we are also there to work with other institutions in ploughing back to the communities we live in,” he said.
