VETERAN producer, Peter Muparutsa, has urged artistes to focus on producing high-quality works that are well thought out and carefully executed, avoiding shortcuts, and always do things the right way in the music industry.

Speaking after celebrating his 66th birthday this week, the veteran producer, who now owns a music production studio in Mutare, PAYS, reminded artistes, both new and established that their lifestyle and decisions must be carefully considered, especially as fame begins to take hold.

Muparutsa, fondly known as ‘Cool Dude’, boasts of more than 40 years in the music industry, and has seen the evolution of the music industry firsthand, navigating its highs and lows with wisdom and experience that only time can offer.

Having worked with some of the biggest names in the business such as Pengaudzoke, Khiama Boys, Oliver Mtukudzi, Thomas Mapfumo, Leonard Dembo, Muparutsa, has learnt invaluable lessons that he now shares with both emerging and established artistes.

For him, success is, not just about creating hits, but about maintaining integrity, producing quality work, and staying true to oneself amidst the ever-changing landscape of the entertainment world.

“As a music producer with years of experience, my advice to both upcoming and established artistes is simple. They should always strive to produce high-quality work. Put thought, care, and effort into every project they create. There is no substitute for doing things the right way and avoid taking shortcuts, as they often lead to compromised results.

“Most importantly, stay grounded and mindful of your lifestyle, especially as fame starts to creep in. It is easy to get caught up in the glitz and glamour, but remember, as artistes, we are in the business of selling dreams. However, those dreams often come packaged in a fragile bubble.

“When that bubble bursts – whether from poor decisions or the pressures of fame – it can be difficult to recover. So, artistes should take their crafts seriously, build your career with integrity, and stay true to yourself. Success is, not just about the spotlight, it is about sustainability, resilience, and the impact you leave behind,” said Muparutsa.

The silky-voiced artiste started playing on stage at the age of 15 as part of the group Sound Power in 1976.

In 1977, he co-founded the group RUNN Family with another veteran producer, Bothwell Nyamhondera, Jerry Muparutsa and the late Alois Muyaruka.

The year 1979 he did his first recording as RUNN FAMILY with a new line-up that comprised Jerry Muparutsa, Pamure Machisa, Newman Chipeni and Dickson Shadenyi.
