THERE has been a high demand for measles vaccination in some suburbs in Mutare, with children of primary school-going age stampeding to get the jab.

At Acid Shops in Zimta Park, nurses who were administering the measles jab occasionally ran out of the injection yesterday and had to wait for supplies.

Children in the company of their parents and guardians were at the shops as early as 7am today.

Government has been conducting a vaccination blitz against measles, targeting children between the ages of six months and five years.

City of Mutare is conducting a two-day vaccination exercise against the disease across the city.

The exercise, which will be integrated with routine immunisation schedules, started yesterday and is ending today,

The vaccinations that will be administered include measles rubella to all children from six months to below 15 years; OPV routine; HPV routine for 10 and 11-year-old girls; Vitamin A routine and Covid-19 first, second and third booster doses to all those above the age of 12 years.

The services are available at all the local authority’s health facilities across the city, which are Sakubva Health Centre, City, Florida, Chikanga, Hobhouse, Dangamvura, Gimboki, and Fern Valley clinics.

Mutare City Council urged parents and guardians to bring all eligible children for vaccination.

Manicaland has recorded the highest number of infections and deaths.

As of September 5, the province had recorded 3009 cases and 347 deaths since the onset of the outbreak of the disease early this year.
