A Makoni man and his sister recently teamed up to chase his wife away from his mother’s funeral.

Tenson and Nerita Chitakasha of Chinembiri Village were fined by Chief Makoni for doing that to Martha Nyarugwe.

The Bulawayo-based Tenson and Nerita reportedly teamed up against the former’s wife, Martha Nyarugwe, from her homestead.

The siblings were accusing Martha of having a hand in their mother’s illness.

Under the Maungwe culture, it is taboo to chase a mourner from a funeral, especially a close relative.

Fighting at a funeral is also prohibited.

The matter was brought to court by Martha’s father, Victor Nyarugwe, who said the Chitakashas should compensate him with three beasts for harassing and embarrassing his daughter.

“My daughter informed me that she is being harassed by her husband. She was barred from rendering assistance to her ill mother-in-law. When she died, my daughter was chased away from the funeral.

“All this is tantamount to accusing her of being a witch. This did not go down well with us and we want to be compensated with three beasts,” said Victor Nyarugwe.

Martha told the court that Neria was the one feeding her brother with false information since he is always away from home.

“My mother-in-law fell ill and as the daughter-in-law, I played my role to assist her. To my surprise, Nerita barred me from assisting her. My husband came and also barred me from setting foot at his mother’s homestead.

“Tenson also refused to sleep in the house that I constructed in his absence. When my mother-in-law died, Tenson and Nerita chased me from the funeral. When my mother-in-law was alive we were in good books so I don’t know why my husband and Nerita are doing this,” said Martha.

Tenson and Nerita were ordered to pay two beasts to the Nyarugwes.

For absconding court, they were fined three goats each.
