CITY of Mutare Town Clerk’s post has suddenly turned into a hot potato with current heads of department turning down offers to occupy the office on an acting basis.
The eastern border city’s top job fell vacant after the demise of Mr Joshua Maligwa early this year and Health Services Director, Anthony Mutara has been performing the town clerk’s duties on an acting basis.
However, Mutara was arrested last week on Friday on corruption charges and has since appeared before the Mutare provincial magistrate, Mr Langton Mukwengi who granted him $40 000 bail.
Mutara has since been suspended from duty by the local authority.
Subsequently, the local authority has appointed Legal Officer, Mr Takunda Nyamandi who is also the acting Chamber Secretary.
Mr Nyamandi was appointed Chamber Secretary following the resignation of Mr Cephas Vuta last year.
Mutare mayor, Councillor Blessing Tandi, confirmed the appointment of Mr Nyamandi as the acting Town Clerk.
“Section 137/2 states that the Chamber Secretary will act as the Town Clerk in the event of a vacancy. The Acting Chamber Secretary is the Acting Town Clerk,” said Cllr Tandi without shedding more light.
However, The Manica Post understands that the current housing director, finance director as well as the city engineer, all senior employees who would have automatically been appointed on an acting basis, turned down the offer.
City of Mutare is currently in the process of hiring a new substantive Town Clerk with shortlisted candidates expected to be made public soon.
