HAUNA district hospital in Honde Valley is plagued by serious shortages of critical medical equipment, among them an X-ray machine.

It also emerged that there is acute shortage of drugs, nursing staff while some of the medical equipment is now obsolete, a situation that has left scores of patients travelling to Bonda Mission Hospital and Mutare Provincial Hospital to seek medical attention.

The hospital only has 46 nurses instead of the required 60.

Speaking last week during a clean-up campaign, Mutasa North Member of Parliament, Chido Madiwa, appealed to Government to come to the rescue and improve the hospital’s health delivery system.

She said the district’s population had expanded over the past decade and there was dire need for the Government to intervene in response to the demographic changes.

“Hauna district has recorded a significant growth in population hence the need for quick intervention. We must save our expecting mothers by providing a safe environment for them. We were cleaning outside but there is need to clean inside. I was shocked to see some expecting mothers sleeping on the floor because the hospital does not have adequate beds and blankets. There is a lot that needs to be done especially inside. I was touched most that people are travelling as far as Mutare and even Harare to seek medical attention especially to be X-rayed.

“There is no food in the hospital. I have observed a lot of things that are not in good shape. There are no blankets, the kitchen is in bad shape with old utensils and the rooms cannot accommodate all the patients. As the MP for Mutasa North, it is my duty that I put things in order. I am appealing to the Government to help us on the dilapidated state of our hospital. The wards at the hospital are overwhelmed and we must come up with quick solutions to avert a disaster at the referral health institution,” she said.
