TWO security guards at Brooklands Farm Game Park in Old Mutare were arrested and appeared in court for shooting a poacher.
Manicaland provincial spokesperson Inspector Luxson Chananda confirmed the incident and said investigations are in progress.
“On August 9, Trust Nyamayende (37) and Shingirai Nyaruwanda (43), both security guards at Brookland Farm, were carrying out routine patrolling at the farm around 9pm when they encountered fish poachers – Joseph Razo (now late) and Simba Mubure – casting nets in a dam on the private property. The guards fired warning shots to scare off the poachers,” said Inspector Chananda.
It is alleged that one of the shots hit Razo on the chest.
He died on the spot.
“The guards called the farm manager, Mr Lawrence Madombo, who attended the scene. Razo’s body was taken to Victoria Chitepo Provincial Hospital for post mortem,” said Inspector Chananda.
Nyamayende and Nyaruwanda were each granted $3 000 bail and will be back in court on September 15.
