DETECTIVES in Nyanga recently arrested three suspects for allegedly smuggling 3 500 litres of petrol and diesel through Gairezi River in Ruwangwe.

Acting Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka, said the three suspects – Adam Marongedza (31), Tambudzai Ngororombe (45) and Givemore Mabvuta – were caught red-handed following a tip-off while loading the fuel into their truck along the banks of Gairezi River.

They were arrested for contravening Section 17 (1) of the Hazardous Substance and Articles Act, Chapter 15.05.

“Police at Ruwangwe Police Station received information that the three were loading fuel along Gairezi River. Police swiftly reacted and intercepted the syndicate at 2am. They arrested them. They recovered 3 500 litres of petrol and diesel.

“We have intensified operations to curb cases of smuggling along border areas and inlands through stop and searches, among other means,” said Assistant Inspector Chinyoka.
