MANICALAND has so far recorded four recoveries from Covid-19, while 14 cases are still active, it has been established.

Speaking at a media briefing organised by the Zimbabwe National Editors’ Forum in Mutare yesterday (Thursday), provincial epidemiology and disease control officer, Dr Munyaradzi Mukuzunga said there is need for communities to adjust accordingly as Covid-19 will not be eliminated in the near future.

“In total, Manicaland has so far recorded 29 cases. Of the 29, 11 infected people were transferred to their provinces of origin, leaving us with 18 cases. From these cases, we have already recorded four recoveries.

“At first we thought that the disease was a fly-by thing, but the reality coming from research shows that we have to live with it for the unforeseeable future. All prevention measures that have been put in place are not temporary, so we now call for everyone’s behaviour change. We should learn to live symbiotically with the disease,” said Dr Mukuzunga.

He said all the reported cases in Manicaland are from returning residents.

“We have not yet recorded any local transmission cases, but we should not be complacent as cases of local infections are now being recorded in the country. We will continue with our monitoring and surveillance programmes to ensure that we contain the spread of the disease.

“Covid-19 response is everyone’s business. We need to deal with the issue of risk perception as some people are disregarding recommended safety measures, especially the need to wear face masks and maintaining physical distances in public places such as vending markets and supermarkets,” he said.

Dr Mukuzunga said the province currentlt has 109 returnees quarantined at Forestry Industrial Training Centre in Toronto (Penhalonga) and Vumba Youth Training Centre.

Returning residents who were housed at Mutare and Marymount Teachers’ Colleges, as well as those who were at Mutare Polytechnic have been cleared to pave way for the re-opening of the tertiary institutions.

“So far, returnees will be housed at Rowa, Magamba, FITC and Vumba centres. We have two positive cases at Rowa and we are still deciding on what to do with them, but plans are afoot to make Rowa an isolation centre.

“We are having challenges in admitting some of the Covid-19 positive patients in isolation centres at hospitals as some of them are in stable conditions that only require self isolation either at home or other conducive places,” he said.

Speaking at the same event, City of Mutare’s health services director, Dr Anthony Mutara called for the continuous monitoring of border areas as some returning residents are using undesignated entry points to cross into the country.

“We need to be very vigilant, especially now when we are recording local infections. We are working tirelessly to provide the necessary social amenities at all vending places.

“We have also engaged health promotion volunteers to help send out awareness messages to residents,” said Dr Mutara.
