A MUTARE family in the Garikayi Section was on Sunday evening left counting losses after fire razed down their two-roomed house, destroying household property worth thousands of dollars in the process.

When The Manica Post visited the area on Monday morning, neighbours were failing to come to terms with the incident that almost left them homeless as the fire nearly encroached to their houses.

According to neighbours interviewed, the inferno razed down household property such as sofas, beds, fridges, electricity and gas stoves.

The cause of the fire is yet to be established as there was noone at the house when the incident happened.

The wooden cabin reportedly belonged to the Nyanhete family.

The owners of the house were away and were yet to arrive to see what remains of their property after one of the neighbours, Ms Kelly Kaicho, alerted them.

“Around 7pm as we were preparing supper we had an explosion and realised that the house was on fire. There was nothing we could do to extinguish the fire.

“The two gas stoves which were in the house exploded and we all panicked before we called the Fire Brigade. They came a few minutes later, but it was too late as everything had already been destroyed,” said Ms Kaicho.

Another neighbour, Mr Obert Vuta, said: “I was alerted of the fire while coming from my friend’s place. I rushed home after realising that the fire had also encroached to my house. Luckily, it only destroyed my fruit trees. We tried in vain to retrieve some of the property that was in that house.”

Acting Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Chinyoka said he was yet to receive a report on the matter.
