PRESIDENT Emmerson Mnangagwa’s administration is fixing the mess that was created over 20 years ago and would not be expected to solve all problems overnight, United States of America Ambassador to Zimbabwe Mr Brian Nichols has said.
Mr Nichols said this while fielding questions on a special current affairs programme on Diamond FM today (Thursday).
“This is a Government that is dealing with two decades of failed policies and you cannot fix that overnight. People have to keep that in perspective. The previous Government accrued debts. The reason Zimbabwe is in arrears with the World Bank, IMF, ADB and with all those international institutions… is because the prior Government took debts and never repaid. That created a lot of challenges moving forward.”
On the issue of sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe, Mr Nichols said: “The agenda that this Government has set for itself would satisfy those conditions (conditions set under ZEDERA).
“I referred earlier to the President’s campaign, his inaugural address, his governing platform, the transitional stabilization programme, all those things address those issues and I am hopeful that the reforms that this Government is working on will get us pass that and will see us move forward.”
The Zimbabwe Democracy and Economic Recovery Act (S. 494) is an act passed by the United States Congress which imposed economic sanctions on Zimbabwe, allegedly to provide for a transition to democracy and to promote economic recovery.
