Every year, March is designated Women’s Month and is a chance to recognise women’s varied, and often under-recognised accomplishments throughout history.

The theme for this year’s Women’s History is ‘Celebrating Women Who Tell Stories’.

Minister Muchinguri-Kashiri

The theme highlights the countless women who have used their voices and creativity to tell stories that educate, inspire, and entertain audiences around the world.

While it’s important to celebrate women all year long, the month was set aside to honour women’s contributions to society and to highlight their achievements and sacrifices.

The month also gives the world a chance to discuss continuing and emerging women’s empowerment and gender equality issues and concerns, challenges, and commitments.

However, Women’s Month means different things to different people and cultures and that is important because we then get to celebrate women using various means.

For some, it means celaebrating each and every woman’s individual achievements; as well as their efforts as a collective.

The late Vivian Mwashita

It is about understanding that I am because we are, and that she is the woman she is because of the other women surrounding her.

For others, it is about understanding that our actions right now are shaping the future of this land in one way or another.

Every woman needs to be accountable to future generations and should therefore ensure that they leave a legacy of authentic beauty, love, strength, hard work and integrity.

In addition, Women’s Month is about celebrating the calm intelligence, quiet confidence, and simple elegance that’s in every woman.

The late Dr Gwaradzimba

Considering all these great attributes, women therefore need to stop making apologies for being successful in their respective fields.

They need to stop making apologies for coming up with brilliant ideas, or getting a promotion ahead of their male colleagues.

You are where you are because you worked hard for it and you deserve it, not only because you are a woman.

It is encouraging to note that Manicaland has its own fair share of women who should be celebrated for their contributions to society.

On the political arena, late heroines who hailed from Manicaland province include Cdes Victoria Chitepo, Vivian Mwashita and Dr Ellen Gwaradzimba, among others.

More female politicians are still making huge strides in their respective communities.

These are the likes of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Monica Mutsvangwa and Defence and War Veterans Minister Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri, among others.

In the business world we have the likes of Mrs Edith Mukuwapasi, the co-director of Knowstics Academy; Ms Sue Peters, founder of several businesses and Mrs Rachel Mugwagwa, co-founder of Mountview Hotel.

All these women and many more have scaled the ladder in their respective fields to dizzy heights, all thanks to their dedication and sacrifices.

Indeed, when a woman puts her heart into something, not even the sky will be the limit.
