TWO Mutare men who were arrested for digging up and stealing TelOne copper cables have been denied bail by the court.

Godfrey Mutsigo (34) of Sakubva and Peter Manase (25) of Gosho Village in Zimunya appeared before Mutare magistrate Ms Prisca Manhibi charged with Contravening Section 89 (3) (a) of the Telecommunications Act Chapter 12:05.

The pair was denied bail and were remanded in custody to January 20.

Mr Israel Sahwenje (58), who is employed as loss control officer by TelOne, represented the complainant.

Ms Tafadzwa Chiwanza prosecuted.

It was the State’s case that on January 4 at Fairbridge Park along Old Harare Road in Mutare, the accused persons observed a TelOne copper cable protruding from the ground.

“They dug up the cable and stole it,” Ms Chiwanza said.

On the same day, police officers from Mutare Central received information about the duo’s actions.

“The police reacted swiftly and arrest the accused,” said Ms Chiwanza.

40 metres of copper cables worth US$80 were recovered.
