IN what could be exciting news for Mutare residents, particularly those residing in Hobhouse, the Mutare District Schools Inspector Mr Creezin Chofamba has said two new primary schools are being built in the suburb.

Highlighting Government plans and targets for 2020 to The Manica Post, Mr Chofamba said plans were afoot to improve accessibility of education by increasing the number of schools in the district.

“As we speak, two new primary schools are being built in the high-density suburb of Hobhouse. One of them is being built by the Salvation Army. The school is called Sekuru Sande Primary School and should be operational by this coming week after a few critical touch-ups.

“We are not sure if the other primary school, which is being built by the Johanne Masowe for the first time in the history of the church, will be ready for opening before the February 2020 deadline. It will be called Feruka Primary School,” said Mr Chofamba.

On other plans for the year, Mr Chofamba had this to say:

“We want to increase our supervision of schools so that we continue to improve on the pass rate and quality of education for our students. We had no zero percent pass rate at Grade 7 in 2019, so we need to build on this. We are still analysing the ‘A’ Level results, but they are encouraging.’’

He added: “We also want to build a state-of-the-art Better Schools Programme Zimbabwe (BSPZ) and Education Development Centre with ICT facilities accessible to teachers, students and the community through the non-formal education facility.’’

Mr Chofamba encouraged the school heads to remain focused.

“To the heads, I encourage you to remain focused. Do not be swayed by the challenges we may be going through as a profession and nation.’’

Meanwhile, some school heads in the district have revealed their plans for 2020.

Mr Michael Mapaura, of Chitakatira High School, said: “We want to build a state-of-the-art sports complex that will cater for various sporting disciplines such as volleyball, netball, basketball and tennis because we have been doing well in ball games, especially the netball team.

“We want to host both district and provincial competitions. We also want to improve our pass rate and learning infrastructure.”

Dangamvura High School head Mr Tendai Nyagope had this to say:

“We want to increase our enrolment and we are not particular about how many units learners got at Grade 7. We also want to sink boreholes at the school to improve water supply while working hard to improve the quality of our passes. We had two boys with 15 points and one girl with 18 points.”
