A MUTASA man is accusing his in-laws of defrauding him by marrying off his wife of six years to another man behind his back.

Livingstone Chimombe (36) claims that his wife, Pamela Nyarukuwa (30) was married off by her family a few days before Christmas Day after he had been tricked into believing that she was only visiting her family for a ceremony.

He claims he was told that Pamela’s brothers were visiting her maternal grandparents’ home to pay chiredzwa (thank you token) after she was raised by her maternal grandmother.

Chimombe also financially contributed towards the journey and ceremony, not knowing that he was facilitating the marrying off of his wife.

Pamela’s bride price was paid on December 17 by another man.

“Pamela was my wife for six years and we have a five-month-old baby together. In December, she told me that she was travelling to her maternal grandparents’ home as her brothers wanted to pay chiredzwa for her to her grandparents who looked after her as she grew up.

“I gave her US$40 to buy drinks for my in-laws and US$20 for her well being. Little did I know that she was going to get married by someone else,” said the bitter man.

He said what hurts him most was the fact that while she was getting married, Pamela would update him of the proceedings over the phone.

“She would tell me that everything was going on well because I had failed to accompany her due to work commitments. I honestly thought she was talking about the chiredzwa proceedings, but instead, she was talking about her marriage.

“After her marriage, she went back to the house I was renting for her in Sakubva and stayed there while I was at work in Old Mutare,” he said.

Chimombe said he only got to know of the new husband after Pamela’s uncle informed him.

“The uncle told me that they were shocked when a new man appeared on the day as they expected me as they had been told. When I went to Sakubva to confront her, Pamela called the police and I was arrested.

“I am so heartbroken that I do not know what to do. She even changed goalposts and claimed that the child was not mine. She should come back and collect her belongings that are still at my house in Old Mutare,” he said.

Chimombe claims that he is in the process of reporting the matter at Chief Mutasa’s court as he wants to be reimbursed what he paid the Nyarukuwas.

However, this was shot down by the Jerera and Nyarukuwa families who vehemently denied that Chimombe was their son-in-law.

They claimed that during the course of the six-year-old partnership between Chimombe and their daughter, no bride price was paid to them.

Contacted for comment, Pamela insisted that Chimombe is on a mission to tarnish her image after turning down his countless advances to rekindle the lost love.

She denied being married to Chimombe.

“I left this man some months back. I even blocked all his numbers as he keeps pestering me, asking me to rekindle our lost love.

“I have moved on and got married. In fact, the baby is not his. I do not know why he is going around claiming that he fathered my child. I never stayed with this man. He stayed elsewhere while I stayed in Sakubva. He only paid my rentals because we were dating.

“In the course of time, I realised that he was wasting my time and I ended things with him. In his mind, he thought that I would eventually get back to him, but I found someone else and got married,” said Nyarukuwa.

On the issue that Chimombe sent her to school, Nyarukuwa laughed before saying she met him when she had completed her studies at Mutare Polytechnic.

She advised the reporter to assist Chimombe with counselling services.

“Why did he approach you with this story? I do not think this is newsworthy. You should assist him with counselling services. I think his mental wellbeing is now questionable. He is actually wasting your time as much as he did mine. You should help him to move on. Publicizing my story or my marriage will not help him because I will sue him,” said Pamela.

Nyarukuwa’s uncle, Billy Jerera, confirmed that his niece was innocent as she was cohabiting with Chimombe prior to her recent marriage.

“This man stayed with my niece for six years and never paid anything. She later came to me and told me that she had had enough of him as he had wasted a lot of her time. When they met, it is my understanding that he promised to marry her, but failed to live up to that promise. Instead, he kept using her and stopped talking about marriage.

“We never received anything from this man and I do not know why he keeps pestering us as a family. It seems as if he is failing to come to terms with the fact that my niece has moved on. He needs to move on too. They were only cohabiting, no child was sired in the relationship and I wonder why he is insisting. He should just grow up,” said Jerera.

Chimombe confirmed not paying lobola for Nyarukuwa, saying she always denied him access to her relatives.

“I would have paid lobola for her in 2017, but she refused, saying that chiredzwa had not yet been paid to her grandparents. I took this woman to school with my money, but she is now paying me back in this manner,” said Chimombe.
