THE country’s leading beverages producer, Delta Corporation has no plans to relocate or shut down its Mutare soft drink plant as it is key in its national supply grid, the company’s senior executive has told The Manica Post.

However, the Zimbabwe Stock Exchange-listed company is re-evaluating its investment of Chibuku Super Plant in Rusape which has been put on hold as it focuses on a Harare-based plant worth US$17 million.

The market was awash with reports that Delta has abandoned the Rusape Chibuku Plant as it intends to shut down its recently acquired Mutare Coca Cola Plant and set the Chibuku plant there.

In an e-mailed response, Delta finance director, Mr Alex Makamure allayed fears of closure of the Mutare soft drinks unit, but said the company is re-evaluating its investment in Rusape.

The company had already erected a massive precast wall at the site, but further developments have been halted as the company’s new management felt the environment is currently not favourable to set up a new mega plant there.

“Please note that the Chibuku Super Plant Project at Rusape was deferred as we are upgrading the Harare Brewery which includes installing a Chibuku Super Plant at a cost of US$17 million. We expect the plant at Harare to be commissioned by May 2023.

“The investment at Rusape is being re-evaluated, taking into account the prevailing operating environment and the anticipated growth in volume and the revised national production capacity. We have no plans to relocate or shut down the soft drinks factory in Mutare. It is contributing to our national supply grid,” said Mr Makamure.

Delta Corporation acquired Mutare Bottling Company from Econet Wireless two years ago as the latter took the route to concentrate on its core mobile phone service provision business.
