A Mutare man has approached the courts seeking protection from a bad debtor after receiving death threats over a US$10 debt.

Prosper Madire told Mutare magistrate, Mr Lazarus Murendo, that Robson Nzarayebani owed him US$10. Madire went on to reveal that Nzarayebani had been harassing and threatening him with death each time he asked the former to settle the debt.

Madire was therefore applying for a protection order against Nzarayebani.

“He is heavily built and I am no match for him. Each time I went to his place to ask him to pay up, he would threaten to kill me and chased me away while brandishing sticks,” narrated Madire.

At one time, Nzarayebani went to Madire’s place of residence and assaulted him with a stick.

“I regret ever lending him my money. He only returned the money after receiving summons to appear in court. I am now living in fear of him and I just want the threats and assaults to stop,” said Madire.

Nzarayebani confirmed chasing away Madire, adding that he did so as the former had grabbed his property as compensation for his money.

Mr Murendo granted the protection order in Madire’s favour and advised him to use the courts whenever there are disputes in settling debs, instead of taking the law into his own hands.
