PEOPLE in Chipinge South are now on high alert of the impending Cyclone Chalane, with some of them already moving to higher ground.

Chipangayi River is already flooded and at night one hears the rumbling sound of a river in flood.
The local Civil Protection Unit chapter has identified Chipangayi Secondary School as an evacuation centre since it is perched on higher ground.

However, there seems to be nothing on the ground to show that the school is ready to accommodate a deluge of people who may flock there for help.

The councillor for the area, Ward Five, Alderman Phibeon Machuwaire, said he is in constant touch with the CPU and will disseminate all the necessary information to the villagers. He said if the need for more tents arises, he will ensure that everything is in place.

A local businessman, Mr Partson Mtetwa, said cyclones will continue wreaking havoc if people build substandard houses.

He said those in the low lying areas must not wait until the cyclone arrives before going to Chipangayi Secondary School.
