GOVERNMENT has extended by a further two weeks the Covid-19 national Level Two lockdown without more relaxation of the safety guidelines, with people being urged to stay vigilant and not drop guard in the face of the pandemic’s lingering threat.
Although the daily infection rates remain low, calls continue to be made against allowing complacency to creep in among citizens so as to keep the disease at bay.
Maintaining the lockdown measures, Government has said, helps in preventing a fourth wave by limiting infection risks as each wave of the infections is longer and deadlier than the previous one.
Announcing the continuation of the national Level Two lockdown yesterday after Cabinet’s meeting, Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Monica Mutsvangwa said: “In spite of the declining cases of Covd-19, Level Two lockdown will be maintained for a further two weeks and members of the public should strictly adhere to the stipulated measures.
“Given that the Covid-19 intensity and duration both increase with each wave, citizens should continue to observe the protocols and preventive measures in place in order to prevent a fourth wave.”
In efforts to improve efficacy, the Ministerial Covid-19 Taskforce, which is chaired by Vice President and Minister of Health and Child Care Dr Constantino Chiwenga, has now been expanded to include provincial affairs ministers and provincial medical directors to ensure that all areas are given full priority in fighting the risks.
Meanwhile, the ongoing countrywide vaccination blitz has seen 3,22 million people getting their first dose, while 2,486 million have been fully inoculated with both jabs against Covid-19.
