MEN make up the large number of those who have succumbed to Covid-19 in Manicaland during the pandemic’s third wave, the provincial health department has said.

According to statistics from the Manicaland Health Department, men constitute 67 percent of the deaths recorded so far.

This was said by Manicaland Epidemiology Diseases Control Officer, Dr Munyaradzi Mukuzunga during a provincial Covid-19 taskforce meeting held in Mutare recently.

“There has been a significantly higher number of Covid-19 related deaths recorded among men, which stands at 67 percent. This can be attributed generally to poor health-seeking behaviour by them compared to their women counterparts. Those aged above 71 account for 41 percent of the deaths recorded, which can be attributed to their advanced age,” said Dr Mukuzunga.

He urged the public to continue with strict adherence to the recommended public health guidelines as well as observing the social measures put in place by Government to mitigate the pandemic’s impact.

Dr Mukuzunga also called on people to get fully vaccinated as this is one of the safe ways of protecting themselves and others.
