FOR the first time in its decade long history, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) Commissioner General’s Half Marathon will be held in the eastern border city of Mutare.

The event will take place on June 11 at Dangamvura Shopping Complex.

In telephone interview, Superintendent in Charge of Sports, Abel Chimukoko, confirmed that Mutare will be hosting the 11th edition of the Commissioner Generals’ Half Marathon.

“The Commissioner General of the Zimbabwe Republic Police 21km Road Race will be held in Mutare this time. The past nine editions were held in Harare, while the 10th edition was held in Bulawayo.

“The Commissioner General of Police realised that it is of paramount importance that all the country’s provinces host the event on a rotational basis so that each and every province has an opportunity to host it.

“As a result, Bulawayo was the host for the 2021 edition of the race and we are now moving to Manicaland. We use this event as a marketing tool to ensure that the police and the public have a cordial relationship, and we want to ensure that the Commissioner General of Police has the opportunity to mix and mingle with the athletes, officials and members of the public,” he said.

Chimukoko noted that the annual long distance contest fosters social cohesion between the force and the public.

“This race is one of the most important events on the police calendar as it incorporates the society and police officers. It is an open race whereby any interested athlete can participate. It has attracted quite a number of top athletes because this race it is quite rewarding.

“We want to ensure that it is all inclusive and that every member of the public has the opportunity to partake in sport. We will have categories that include wheelchair, junior athletes, veterans, masters, mistress and tertiary among others,” said Chimukoko.

Manicaland Athletics Board boss, Joshua ‘Zesa’ Matume, said registration of athletes is already underway online.

“Manicaland Athletics Board is so excited to host the 2022 Commissioner General of Police Half Marathon. Preparations for the event are already at an advanced stage.

“As Manicaland Athletics Board, we are proud to host this event since it will provide an opportunity for our athletes to interact with some of the country’s professional athletes. We are inviting all clubs, schools, tertiary institutions and community clubs to participate in this very important event. There are a lot of prizes to be won. This is one of the most paying event in the country sponsored by Old Mutual. Registration is already open online. Prizes will be announced in due course,” said the MAB chairperson.

Meanwhile, preparations for the annual Tanganda Half Marathon are also underway as local long distance athletes brace for a busy schedule ahead.

Matume said: “The date for the Tanganda Half Marathon has been slated for June 26. Preparations are already on course and we will be making formal announcements soon as and when appropriate.”
