A MARYMOUNT Teachers College student died on Monday at Victoria Chitepo Provincial Hospital where he had been admitted prior to being attacked by machete-wielding robbers in Sakubva on Friday.
Manicaland Police Spokesperson, Inspector Luxson Chananda confirmed the attack of Fortunate Mwenzva by unknown assailants who approached him as he was looking for transport to Chakohwa early Friday morning. Mwenzva was enroute to Chakohwa from Harare.
Mwenzva (29) who was in his final year Marymount Teachers College arrived in Mutare late from Harare where he had gone to sell cooked birds (ngozha) to raise his school fees.
He then slept outside the N Richards shop in Sakubva together with an unidentified man.
Early the next morning the unidentified man woke him up and told him that they had to go get Chakohwa transport at Sakubva swimming. The man insisted even after Mwenzva had refused telling him that Chakohwa buses would pick him up at the shop’s premises.
When they were near the traffic lights, the unidentified man told Mwenzva to run away after seeing a group of men who were armed with machetes. The men caught up with Mwenzva and when he surrendered his money and shoes, the men indicated that they were interested in him and not the money.
One of the men struck him with a machete on his head and on his right eye.
“Mwenzva screamed for help prompting bus conductors and vendors to rush to him and offer help.
“The assailants immediately ran away and Mwenzva was rushed to Victoria Chitepo Provincial Hospital where he died three days later,” said Insp Chananda.
The unidentified suspects are still at large and Insp Chananda has urged the public to come forward with information they might have on the matter.
Meanwhile, police in Manicaland are looking for a 35-year-old Rusape man who allegedly struck his wife with an axe on the head over infidelity issues.
Inspector Chananda confirmed the incident saying Virimai Milton Chihobo of Muziti Village B under Chief Chiduku who is husband to the now deceased Martha Chinava (43) had a misunderstanding with his wife on which he accused her of having an extra marital affair.
Chihobo went on to strike the deceased with an axe. She died on the spot as she sustained deep head injuries.
The body of the deceased was taken to Rusape General Hospital for post mortem and her next of kin have since been informed with investigation still underway as the accused is still at large.
