THE trial of a Chipinge disabled man who sprang from his wheelchair to stab and instantly kill an unsuspecting police officer over illicit beer has started at Mutare High Court.

The suspect, Lloyd Mahovana Mabiti (33) of Muzondakaya Village under Chief Musikavanhu, was resisting arrest for drinking illicit beer at a local bottle store when he allegedly committed the crime.

Justice Isaac Muzenda is hearing the case while Ms Jane-Rose Matsikidze is prosecuting. The court heard that on June 13, 2019 at around 9pm, Mahovana was drinking illicit beer with his friends Panganai Dzvairo, Chionei Chinyama and Eric Murire.

“Constable Nobody Kadeya (37), who was clad in police uniform, approached the four as they were drinking the illicit beer and advised them that they were under arrest.

“Constable Kadeya advised them to proceed to the police station. This did not go well with Mahovana, who refused to comply with lawful instructions. He refused to be pushed in his wheelchair by the now deceased police officer,” said Ms Matsikidze.

“The police officer had to forcibly push the accused person’s wheelchair. When they arrived at the police officer’s vehicle, an angry Mahovana took advantage of the officer’s lapse in concentration as he was opening the door.

“Mahovana produced a knife from his pocket and stabbed the police officer thrice in the chest, shoulder and mouth, thereby killing him on the spot,” the court heard.

Kadeya’s body was ferried to Chipinge General Hospital mortuary for a post-mortem.
