Child MP awarded doctorate degree Dr Mukuhwa

JUNIOR Member of National Assembly for the Special Constituency of People with Disabilities for Manicaland, Honourable Tanaka Mukuhwa’s profile continues to rise as his advocacy against child marriages has earned him an honorary doctorate degree from the University of London in partnership with the World Health Organisation.

The renowned 18-year-old advocate for children’s rights was recently awarded a Doctor of Philosophy – Advocacy in eradicating child marriages and abuses.

WHO communications officer, Dr Pippa Haughton, confirmed the conferment of the PHD degree on Dr Mukuhwa in a letter that was also glimpsed by The Manica Post.

The letter reads in part: “We are pleased to be writing this letter to you confirming that you have received a doctorate degree from the World Health Organisation in partnership with European Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education.”

The awarding tertiary institution is the University of London.

“Through your philanthropic work which is channelled towards eradicating child marriages and abuses, we have conferred you with an honorary doctorate. We appreciate the work you are doing in the nation of Zimbabwe and in the international community in the reduction of child marriages and abuses.

“You can use this doctorate degree anywhere. It is a recognition of the hard work you are doing towards eradicating child marriages and abuses.”

In an interview with The Manica Post, Dr Mukuhwa said the honour came as a huge and pleasant surprise.

“I was shocked to hear the news and to see that my advocacy work had been recognised by such big international institutions. At first I could not believe it, but later on I was overjoyed after realising that my vision of eradicating child marriages and other abuses is coming into fruition.

“I thank WHO, the European Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education and the University of London for awarding me the honorary degree. I am indeed honoured,” said the Zimunya High School ‘A’ Level student who is majoring in History, Literature in English as well as Family and Religious Studies.

Apart from his role as a Junior Parliamentarian, Dr Mukuhwa is the president of the International and Zimbabwean charters of Young People’s Network on Child Marriages, Abuses and Rights; the UNESCO Junior Country Director for Zimbabwe and Malawi; UNCRC Junior Country Director for Zimbabwe and Namibia; Global Ambassador for New Hope Foundation Global Network; National Peer Advisory Board Chairperson for the Young People’s Network on Sexual Reproductive Health; HIV and AIDS District Facilitator for Mutare Rural.

 

Dr Mukuhwa has managed to use his vast experience in advocacy work to transform the lives of Manicaland’s girl child.
