IN a bid to end child marriages in their communities, traditional leaders in Makoni District have joined forces to help eliminate the vice from the face of Manicaland Province.

The collaborative efforts follow concern over the district’s incidences of sexual abuse and child marriages as well as school drop-outs owing to pregnancies.

Child marriages are illegal in Zimbabwe and Government has been stepping up efforts to eradicate them by 2030 in line with target 5.3 of the Sustainable Development Goals.

Chief Chipunza – Mr Thomas Makonyora – encouraged collective action among traditional leaders in his community, saying they will continue raising awareness that all children are equal regardless of sex in a bid to combat gender-based violence.

He also called for stringent penalties and sentences against perpetrators of child abuse and child marriages, adding that children deserve a chance to enjoy their right to education.
