MINISTRY of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare has urged various government ministries to monitor and evaluate the implementation of sustainable development goals to enhance data collection in order to achieve vision 2030.

The idea of SDGs is to ensure that governments in different countries and their development partners are on the same page regarding global challenges that need urgent attention.

Speaking at a three day workshop in Mutare on Monday, chief director in the ministry Mr Clifford Matorera said the country was still faced with challenges of data collection despite being in the fourth year of implementing SDGs.

“Data availability varies significantly from goal to goal. “However, for some goals the collection and organisation of the most basic data sets remains a challenge.

“The monitoring and evaluation of SDGs has often been pursued in a disaggregated way in different sectors and this presents various obstacles in regard to measuring co-benefits of our integrated actions in implementing SDGs.

“Without well coordinated monitoring and evaluation plans these challenges cannot be eased,” he said.

Mr Matorera said Government ministries should come up with viable plans to constantly monitor and evaluate the progress being made in achieving the sustainable development goals in order to have a correct picture of where the country is headed.

“The objective of this workshop is to develop a framework that will see the level of monitoring and evaluation improved at national level. It is important to recall that the SDGs are not just an additional plan for the world, nor do they replace the specific and detail of existing international agreements. The SDGs are a shared vision of world,” he said.

The 17 SDGs which were agreed on with a deadline for attainment set for 2030.

SDGs are an expansion of the millennium development goals (MDGs).

Among the set SDGs is ending poverty in all its forms everywhere, ending hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promoting sustainable agriculture.

SDGs also seek to ensure healthy lives and to promote the well-being for all at all ages.
