TWO BATA employees who allegedly stole shoes worth $16 000 from their employer and made a false burglary report to the police have been arraigned before the courts.

Peter Chivandire (47) and Moses Muzanya (40) were remanded out of custody to July 24 on $50 bail when they appeared before senior Mutare magistrate, Mrs Sekai Chiundura.

They were not asked to plead to theft as defined in Section 113 (2) (d) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act, Chapter 9:23 and that of making a false report.

Mutare lawyer, Mr Farai Matinhure of Gonese and Ndlovu Legal Practitioners represented the pair, while Mr Flecther Karombe represented the State.

Circumstances surrounding the matter were that on June 6,the pair hatched a plan to steal from their employer and called one Ellipse Javangwe who is a businesswoman in Chipinge and gave her 1 920 pairs of Tommy and 165 pairs of bumper shoes.

They receipted the transaction on a receipt book which was not in use and were given a deposit of $1 000 by Javangwe which they shared.

It was further alleged that on June 10, Chivandire and Muzanya stage-managed a burglary case at the Bata premises and made a false report at Mutare Central Police Station in order to cover up for the theft.

“Investigations were carried out and detectives discovered that the duo had stolen the shoes. They were picked up and admitted to have committed the offence,” said Mr Karombe.

“On June 25, Chivandire and Muzanya led police detectives to Javangwe who had bought the 2 040 pairs of shoes and the stolen property was positively identified,” he said.

Total value stolen is $15 931 and property worth $14 837 was recovered.
