During a beer binge a fortnight ago, a Rusape man allegedly fatally assaulted his neighbour over unknown reasons.

Tawanda Makoni (34) from Epiphany Farm last week appeared before Rusape magistrate, Ms Rutendo Machingura.

He was facing murder charges and was remanded in custody to October 22 for routine remand. Makoni was advised to apply for bail at the High Court.

State prosecutor, Mr Benoni Makuvire said Makoni banged Fidelis Baiwayi’s head several times on the bar counter.

Baiwayi was later found dead the following day. “On September 25, Makoni and Baiwayi arrived at Ndedzo Bottle Store in Epiphany and started drinking beer. Makoni then started assaulting Baiwayi.

“The owner of the bottle store, Zvikomborero Ndedzo, tried to restrain Makoni from assaulting Baiwayi but he was over-powered.

“Hours later, Makoni went home. After about 30 minutes, Baiwayi followed using the same route,” said Mr Makuvire.

However, Baiwayi did not get home. He was found dead at Plot 9 the following day.

A post-mortem conducted revealed that Baiwayi died due to severe trauma.
