A NEWLY-BORN baby survived hours in a Blair toilet pit after being dumped by her mother.

The mother, Moleen Mushandi (28), was convicted on her own guilty plea when she appeared before Mutare magistrate, Ms Nyasha Kuture facing charges of exposing an infant by dumping her in a pit latrine.

She will appear again in court today (Thursday) for sentencing.

Mr Chris Munyuki prosecuted.

The court heard that on December 10 and at Matowe homestead, Machangwirwa Village in Marange, Mushandi secretly gave birth in a Blair toilet and dumped the baby before going back to sleep.

“During that morning, Mushandi’s neighbour, Hardlife Mutengo woke up and went to the toilet to relieve himself. On approaching the toilet, Mutengo heard a baby crying. Mushandi and Mutengo use the same pit latrine.

“Mutengo torched the toilet pit and noticed a bundled white object from which the cries of the baby were coming from,” said Mr Munyuki.

Mutengo summoned another neighbour and they both retrieved the baby. They approached Mushandi and asked her about the baby and she admitted dumping it in the toilet just after giving birth.
