TWO armed robbers suspected to be illegal diamond dealers on Monday robbed two Mutare residents of $500 and a vehicle before shooting one of them and speeding off.

Police confirmed the incident which happened at Muchena Business Centre in Chiadzwa. The robbers later dumped the car a few kilometres away and disappeared with the loot, leaving Phillip Chipenzi (31) and Getrude Chakandirova (32) stranded.

“The two are still on the run and we are appealing to members of the public with information leading to their arrest to contact their nearest police station. We have since launched a manhunt to bring the suspects to book,” said Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Tavhiringwa Kakohwa.

He said Chipenzi and Chakandirova who reside in Chikanga and Dangamvura respectively, were at Muchena Business Centre when they were approached by the two.

“They demanded cash. One of the complainants refused to bow down to their demands and one of the suspects produced a pistol and shot Chipenzi on his right thigh. They robbed them of $500 and a vehicle – a silver Toyota Corolla Ex-Salon – and drove away. They later dumped the car a few kilometres from the robbery scene. The car was recovered,” said Insp Kakohwa.
