THREE armed robbery suspects who attacked a Penhalonga family recently and got away with a truck and cellphones have been arrested.

The trio – Kudakwashe Chavhunduka (28), Simon Jingo (38), Peter Kasu (28) – of Harare appeared before Mutare magistrate, Mr Langton Mukwengi, facing armed robbery charges.

They were remanded in custody.

Ms Tafadzwa Chiwanza prosecuted.

It is alleged that on the night of September 25, the three suspects, together with the other two who are still at large, hatched a plan to pounce on the complainant.

“Armed with a homemade rifle, two okapi knives, one machete and switches, they proceeded to Maitire’s home. One of the suspects, only identified as Ex-clary and still at large, knocked at the door pretending to be an acquaintance of the complainant and claimed that he wanted to sell him gold,” said Ms Chiwanza.

The complainant opened the door and the suspects attacked him before assaulting him and his wife with fists, open hands, switches and a machete while demanding cash.

“The assailants tied the pair’s hands and legs using shoelaces. After ransacking the house looking for cash, they took two itel cellphones and US$20. They also took keys and vehicle documents of the complainant’s Mazda Titan truck which was parked outside,” said Ms Chiwanza.

The suspects drove away with three Ameen generators, one centrifugal submersible pump and power extension cables in the truck.

The complainant managed to untie himself and his wife. He then made a police report at ZRP Penhalonga.

Alert police officers manning a roadblock arrested the suspects as they were driving towards Murambinda.

The value of the stolen property is $ 877 028 and $ 868 528 was recovered.
