WITH preparations for the 2021/22 agricultural season well on course, farmers in Manicaland province have started receiving training on efficient and sustainable Pfumvudza techniques from the Department of Agricultural, Technical and Extension Services.

Agritex provincial officer Mrs Philipa Rwambiwa said the move is meant to help farmers under the programme achieve high yields using less land, water and chemicals while ensuring profitability.

“We are targeting to train 349 000 households in the province on Pfumvudza and have covered almost 40 percent in terms of that. The training is continuing well and we are hoping that by October 1 all the households will have been trained,” said Mrs Rwambiwa.

She encouraged farmers under the Pfumvudza programme to consult Agritex officers for assistance in digging the scaled up five plots per each of the targeted households.

Tillage, pot-holing, mulching and acquisition of inputs like seed maize, fertilisers and chemicals has already started as the programme is seeking to double last season’s output and earnings for farmers following a highly successful 2020/21 season.

Pvumvudza is sponsored by Government and aims to increase and commercialise agricultural productivity in communal areas that rely on rain through conservation agriculture methods.
