FARMERS in Mutasa District have been urged to adopt effective farming practices like rotating crops and pesticides as a way of avoiding pest resistance.

This follows an attack of the maize crop by the fall armyworm in Honde Valley recently.

Mutasa Agritex officer Mr Abraham Matsanura said rotation of crop production chemicals helps in significantly reducing the development of resistant pests on the fields.

He added that crop rotation is another way of breaking the life cycle of pests, thereby protecting the crops from being affected.

Continuously planting the same crop, Mr Matsanura said, leads to pests building up and breeding their resistance on the fields.

“To fight pest resistance, it is important to rotate crops as this changes the pests’ complex. This helps in preventing the crop from harbouring insect and disease pests, which can allow for effective pest control,” said he said.
