MACADAMIA nuts farmers have been urged to strictly follow the agro-preparations calendar in order to produce high quality yields.
Manicaland Province’s Chipinge and Chimanimani Districts are the country’ largest producers of the nuts owing to their perfect climatic conditions and soils.
With output expected at between 8 000 and 9 000 tonnes, Macadamia Association of Zimbabwe secretary general Mr James Maisiri said embracing the best agric practices helps in increasing productivity of the potentially lucrative crop.
This contributes to the country’s output of the nuts to remain steady, he added.
Macadamia nuts are a high value export commodity whose increasing demand is coming largely from the European countries.
However, calls have been made for Government to support the green diamond farmers through supply of inputs as the nuts can greatly contribute to the growth of the economy through foreign currency generation.
