FARMERS in Manicaland Province have been urged to stay alert and adapt to the shifting of seasons resulting from climate change in order to avoid losses in their agribusiness.
Climate change, which is largely caused by human activity, is defined as a place’s long-term alteration of temperature and weather patterns.
It increases pressure on the global agriculture system and may reduce crop yields and affect food or nutritional quality while also lowering livestock productivity.
With climate change becoming a global problem, a local agronomist, Mr Frank Pahlo, called on farmers to revise their agriculture methods to adopt those that can withstand the phenomenon.
“It is imperative for farmers to pay particular attention to the changing climate. A lot is happening in the world owing to this phenomenon and even here in Zimbabwe we are experiencing those changes in our weather and rainfall patterns as compared to the past. All this has a huge bearing on farming activities and may require farmers to change practices and even the crops they grow,” said Mr Pahlo.
He encouraged farmers to heed weather forecasts and follow news and updates by the Metrological Services Department as this is important for planning purposes.
