WITH Zimbabwe yesterday taking delivery of 25 000 doses of the Russian Covid-19 vaccine – Sputnik V – donated by diamond miner Alrosa Group, the country is well on course with its accelerated vaccination programme.

The consignment, which was received by Health and Child Care Deputy Minister Dr John Mangwiro, is a second batch of the first 25 000 doses received by President Mnangagwa and will ensure that those who received the first jab will be fully vaccinated.

Research by the Gamaleya National Research Centre of Epidemiology and Microbiology has revealed that the Sputnik V Covid-19 vaccine has been scientifically tested and proven to have a 97,6 percent efficacy.

Zimbabwe is moving ahead with the accelerated vaccination exercise after taking receipt of two million Chinese-made Sinovac doses and is expecting another 3,5 million jabs before the end of this month in two batches of 1,5 million and two million.

The World Health Organisation-approved Sinopharm and Sinovac vaccines are being mainly used in the country.

Health experts continue urging people to be inoculated, with Dr Mangwiro imploring those with suspected Covid-19 symptoms to seek early treatment to enhance their chances of survival.
