7 perish in holiday accidents

SEVE people have died while twenty six others were injured in road traffic accident that occurred during the Heroes and Defence Forces holidays in Manicaland.

Five people died last Friday while 20 others were injured when a mini bus heading towards Mutare veered off the road before plunging into Mutare River.

The deceased were identified as Isaiah Mawoyo (43) who was driving the vehicle, Richard Chinyowa (53), Anna Chitsiku, Innocent Ngwaruru and one Chatseyama, of Nyangudi Village.

An Isuzu NTR which had 42 passengers aboard, veered off the road and, hit the blocks of the bridge and plunged into a river after the detachment of left front wheel.

The mini bus hit the blocks of the bridge, plunged into the river and landed on its roof.

In another fatal crash, two people died on the spot while six others were injured, when a Toyota Hiace they were travelling in hit a trailer of a stationary truck and veered to the right side of the road at the 126-kilometre peg along Harare-Mutare road.

The accident occurred near Eagle nest, Headlands on Sunday.

Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Tavhiringwa Kakohwa said: “The Toyota Hiace was being driven by Humphrey Kuchigu (56) and he was carrying eight passengers, he lost control of his vehicle and hit a truck’s trailer which had a Mozambican number plate. The truck was stationary.”

Two people died on the spot and their bodies were taken to Rusape General Hospital for post mortem while the other six injured ones were rushed to Marondera.
