SUPPORT Unit police details in Penhalonga this week intercepted two vehicles that were carrying 323 bales of second-hand clothes which had been smuggled from Mozambique through an illegal crossing point.

The drivers of the vehicles, whose identity is yet to be established, bolted from the scene, leaving the vehicles behind.

Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Nobert Muzondo confirmed the incident.

“Police Support Unit details that were deployed at Sheeba in Penhalonga received a tip-off that there were people who were trying to smuggle some bales of second-hand clothes. They reacted and mounted an ambush in the area.

“They observed that some vehicles carrying the bales had their headlights switched off. They pounced on them and deflated the tyres of two of the vehicles. The drivers disappeared into darkness and fled from the scene. The vehicles were an unregistered white Scania and an Iveco. They were carrying a total of 323 bales of second-hand clothes,” he said.
