TWO Mutare Farm Prison inmates were this week arraigned before the magistrate’s court facing sodomy charges.

The two – Garden Rondozai (21) and Tendai Norest Samunda (25) – pleaded guilty when they appeared before Mutare magistrate, Ms Prisca Manhibi and were both remanded to September 9 for sentencing.

The two are being charged with sodomy as defined in Section 73 (1) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act, Chapter 09: 23.

It was the state’s case led by Miss Tafadza Chiwanza that on January 2, the two were sharing the same cell with another inmate who saw them engaging in the act and alerted prison officers who swiftly responded.

Meanwhile, ZPCS Officer Commanding Manicaland, Commissioner Spetosomusa Moyo Chinobva, said ZPCS will remain resolute in upholding the statues as enshrined in the Constitution including issues relating to sodomy.

Commissioner Chinobva said ZPCS will thrive to provide rehabilitation of inmates and shun acts of criminality within the prisons set-up.

“As ZPCS we will remain resolute in upholding the statutes of this country as enshrined in the Constitution. I am sure it is clear, like in the current case before the courts, that it is the ZPCS officers who acted swiftly in bringing the culprit to book.

“This has been our thrust and will always be. Our mandate is to provide rehabilitation for inmates. Therefore, that means there is no room for tolerance of acts of criminality, sodomy included,” she said.
